My register drawer popped open and dumped $20 in coins everywhere during a rush
Happened yesterday at the burger place I work at. I was trying to grab a dime for a customer's change and the whole drawer slid out and flipped over. Coins rolling under the fryer, under the shake machine. Manager just sighed and told me to count it out after closing. Lost about 45 minutes sweeping under equipment with a flashlight. Has anyone else had a register drawer just give up like that?

I mean, I get what you're saying about the tab bending out of shape, but honestly it kind of sounds like you're making excuses for someone who maybe just yanked the drawer too hard. Those registers have a lock and a slide mechanism for a reason, and if you're grabbing at the dime so fast that the whole thing flips out, that's on you, not the manager. The manager sighing probably wasn't about the register, it was about having to deal with a cleanup that could've been avoided if you just slowed down for two seconds. Sweeping under the fryer with a flashlight is a pain, but it's not like the drawer did it to you on purpose.

Hold on, losing 45 minutes sounds like a bad day but that drawer probably just needed a bump or a shove. Those things don't usually flip out for no reason, they get worn down from being slammed shut a thousand times. Your manager sighing isn't your fault, but sweeping under the fryer with a flashlight is exactly what I'd expect at a burger place. Those drawers have a little metal tab that bends out of shape after a while, ten seconds and a pair of pliers fixes it. Sounds like your manager owes you a better maintained register more than you owe them an apology.

Oh come on, is it really that big of a deal? 45 minutes of sweeping under a fryer doesn't sound like the end of the world to me. And @ben_lewis, you're acting like the guy yanked the drawer out on purpose or something. It's a worn out register, not some crime scene. I've bumped those things plenty of times and they don't flip out unless the tab is already bent. Managers sigh for all kinds of reasons, maybe they were just tired of being there too.
