Rented a rug doctor and it actually made my carpets worse
I rented one of those Rug Doctor machines from the grocery store last Saturday. Followed the instructions exactly, used their brand soap, went slow over each spot. By Sunday morning my whole living room smelled like wet dog mixed with mildew. The carpets looked fine when they dried but that smell just got stronger. I called a local carpet guy in St. Paul and he said those machines don't extract enough water. He told me they leave soap residue behind that traps dirt and bacteria. Now I'm looking at paying $250 for a professional steam clean just to fix what I did. Has anyone else had a rental machine ruin their carpets like this

Oh come on, is it really that bad? I've rented those things a couple times and just made sure to run an extra cycle with plain hot water after the soap and it turned out fine. Maybe people are just using way too much soap or not rinsing enough.
