Rant: Spent 6 months overwatering my snake plant because every blog said "keep soil moist"

I had three snake plants slowly turning yellow and mushy at the base, but I kept watering them every week like all the plant care sites told me. My neighbor who works at a greenhouse saw them on my porch and told me snake plants actually prefer dry soil for 2-3 weeks between waterings, especially in lower light. Has anyone else found that those general watering guides for houseplants just don't match what works in your specific setup?

So did the blogs actually kill your plants or just waste your time?

Had a buddy who followed some blog's advice to the letter and dumped a cup of water on his snake plant every Sunday like clockwork, ended up with mushy roots in a month. @amy_craig28 your friend was right, that weekly watering advice is a death sentence for most houseplants.
