Appreciation post: That clear night on my roof last Friday
I spent three hours on my roof watching stars with a cheap telescope I got for my birthday. The moon had this weird halo around it that I still can't explain. Has anyone else seen something like that near the moon on a cold night?

Hate to disagree but I don't think that ice crystal thing is the whole story. I've seen that halo on warm nights too, and the edges looked way too sharp for something caused by random ice in the air. I spent a whole night googling it after I saw it and found a bunch of reports from people who saw the same thing right before earthquakes or weird weather changes. There's even an old farmer's almanac trick where they used moon halos to predict storms days in advance, way before any weather satellites existed. I'm not saying it's aliens or anything, just that we don't really know what's going on up there half the time.

Was it a really cold night? I've seen that halo thing a few times, usually when it's super cold and the air is still. It's just ice crystals in the high clouds, light bends around them. I thought my telescope was broken the first time I saw it, but it's pretty common once you know what to look for.
