Had a client in Dallas ask for a herringbone pattern with 6 inch planks last month, said they saw it on a design show. Tried to explain why that's a bad idea for their space.

Six inch planks in herringbone? That's the part that got me. Herringbone needs a longer, skinnier plank to look right, to get that tight weave effect. With a six inch width, the pattern would just look chunky and off, like the whole floor is made of little stumpy bricks. It would fight the whole point of the design. I'm shocked they even make planks that wide for herringbone installs. That client must have seen a totally different thing on TV.

My buddy's contractor talked him into that exact layout and now his kitchen floor looks like a giant, confusing checkerboard.

Hot take: Chunky herringbone is a crime. Okay but seriously, that combo is a total design fail. Six inch planks are way too fat for that pattern, it would just look like a bunch of weird rectangles slapped together. The whole magic of herringbone is in the long, skinny lines. TV shows never show the real world problems, they just want it to look good for the camera for five seconds.
