Update: I switched from a standard 4-inch scraper to a 6-inch carbide model for pulling up old adhesive.
The extra width and sharper blade cut my time on a 900 sq ft demo in Tacoma last week from a full day down to about 5 hours. Anyone have a better tool for that kind of work, or is this the best option out there right now?

Have you tried a floor scraper with a long handle? I've found the extra leverage from standing up beats any hand scraper for big areas, even a good carbide one. It saves your back and lets you put your whole weight into it. In my experience, that setup is way faster for demo over hundreds of square feet.

Wait, you're standing on the tile you're scraping?

My last job in Everett had about 800 sq ft of that black cutback adhesive. I used a 4-inch hand scraper for the first room and it was killing me. Switched to a long-handle floor scraper with a 10-inch blade for the rest, and it was a total game changer. You can really lean into it without wrecking your knees.

Oh man, I feel like a total rookie now. I was so proud of my 6-inch scraper upgrade, but you guys are talking about standing up with a long handle? I've been crawling around on my knees like a chump for years. That sounds way better for my back, which is already pretty wrecked. I guess I got stuck in my ways and never even thought to try the standing kind. Next time I have a big floor to do, I'm definitely going that route.
