Ugh, I learned this the hard way last season. My shears were so dull they mashed the stems on my roses, and half the blooms wilted early. Now I set a calendar reminder for every Sunday night. It takes five minutes, but the clean cuts help everything last so much longer. Really wish I'd started doing it sooner.

Sharp shears really do make a difference, huh? What do you use to sharpen them? I've tried a file and a whetstone, but idk which is best for garden tools. Like, my basil plants got brown edges when I used dull scissors for harvesting. Maybe it's just me, but I notice plants heal faster from clean cuts. Do you oil the blades after sharpening to keep them from rusting?

Wait, your basil got brown edges too? I thought mine was just a weird fluke but maybe it really was the scissors.

How many pairs of scissors have I ruined by trying to sharpen them myself? I got one of those little handheld sharpeners, but I pressed way too hard and basically filed off the whole edge. Now I just take them to the hardware store once a year, it costs like five bucks and they do it right. My plants are probably relieved I gave up.
