I cut all my peonies a week early this year and it paid off big time

I had to choose between cutting my garden peonies at the usual bud stage or taking a risk and cutting them a full 7 days earlier, when they were still super tight. I picked the early cut, kept them in the cooler at 34 degrees, and forced them open slowly in the shop. They lasted almost 14 days in arrangements instead of the usual 5. My clients in Charleston kept asking how the blooms were so perfect and long-lasting. Has anyone else tried pushing the harvest window on a specific flower with results that surprised you?

Wait, so you're telling me I've been wasting my time with my standard "cut and pray" method this whole time? Some of us are out here treating our peonies like delicate little snowflakes, and bam, you just drop a science experiment on us like it's nothing. I tried that "cooler at 34 degrees" trick once, but my cooler was full of half-empty salsa jars and a forgotten bag of ice that melted into a puddle. My flowers ended up looking like they'd been in a wrestling match with a lawnmower. You probably have some secret lab setup with humidity controls and a fancy thermostat, don't you? Or maybe you just got lucky and the flower gods decided to smile on you this year. Either way, I'm jealous and my peonies are not. They're sitting in a vase right now, looking at me like "you should've put us in the cooler, dummy." I'll stick to my usual "cut them at bud stage and hope for the best" routine, but I'll definitely be side-eyeing my cooler next time.

You just got lucky with a cool spring and your cooler did all the work.

Nah, you still gotta know how to pack it right. Ice on the bottom, dense stuff on top.

Right? It's all about the layers. I tried the ice on top thing once and ended up with a cooler full of cold water and soggy food by day two. Now I pack a solid block of ice underneath, then meats and drinks, and the chips and buns go up top. That order keeps everything dry and cold for like four days straight. What kind of ice do you use, the block or the cubes?
