I switched from using a standard floral foam cage to a chicken wire frame for a large arch last weekend.

The arch was for a wedding in Charlotte, and we had to set it up outside. The foam cage was heavy, soaked up a ton of water, and started to sag after about six hours in the sun. The chicken wire frame was lighter, used less water, and the flowers stayed fresh and secure for the entire event. The setup time was about the same, but the result was much sturdier. Has anyone else made this switch for outdoor pieces? I'm curious if there are better ways to secure the wire.

My first big outdoor job in Raleigh I stuck with floral foam because that's what I learned on. I was always worried chicken wire would look messy or not hold enough water. Seeing your arch hold up for a whole event in that heat is a game changer. I'm going to try the wire method for my next outdoor install and just wrap it really well with that green waterproof tape before I add the stems.

My friend's chicken wire arch totally fell apart last summer, so @gavin365, that waterproof tape idea is a lifesaver.

Honestly I've found that tape just traps moisture against the wire over time. @gavin365, the rust will still get started under there. A good heavy coat of spray paint on the bare wire first works way better for me.
