My friend in Portland swears 'no sugar added' juice is healthy
We were grabbing lunch and she picked a bottle of orange juice with that label, saying it was her clean choice. I checked and it still had 28 grams of sugar per serving, all from the fruit itself. She argued it's natural so it doesn't count, but that's a lot of sugar either way. Do you think labels like that trick people into thinking it's a low-sugar drink?

Oh man, I read a nutrition blog that called this "health halo" labeling. It totally tricks people because "no sugar added" sounds good, but the natural sugar is still a ton. Your friend's juice is basically soda with vitamins.

Ugh, @christopherw34, my sister fell for that with smoothies.

Actually, that juice comparison feels a bit off. Natural sugar in fruit comes with fiber and other stuff that changes how your body handles it, unlike the straight sugar rush in soda. Amy_craig28, your sister's smoothie might still be a better choice than a candy bar or a real soda, even with the sugar. Calling it a total trick just lumps all sweet things together, and that misses a lot of the details. It's not health halo stuff so much as people needing to know the full picture.

Saw my buddy chug a green juice thinking it was diet food.
