My 'heart healthy' cereal had more sugar than a candy bar and I'm done with it
Grabbed a box of that popular oat cereal with the big heart check logo on it last Tuesday. Checked the label after my kid said it tasted too sweet, and boom, 12 grams of sugar per serving. That's basically a fun size Snickers. The front screams about whole grains and cholesterol, but the fine print tells a different story. Anyone else feel totally tricked by those official looking symbols?

Maybe the real issue is expecting a cereal to be a health food anyway.

My buddy Mike bought a box of Frosted Flakes with that heart check logo on it last year. He actually told me he felt good about eating it because of that little symbol, thought he was making a smart choice. Then his doctor laughed when he mentioned it during a checkup, said the logo just means it meets some basic nutrition guidelines not that it's actually healthy for you. Mike still eats the cereal but now he just shrugs and says it's a treat, not a health food. Funny how a little sticker can trick people into ignoring what's in the bowl.

That heart check logo is such a trap. Who even decides what gets to wear that symbol?

The American Heart Association sets those standards, emeryj66, and they're pretty strict about it.
