Finally got my first crypto wallet set up after three tries
Three years ago, I tried to buy some Bitcoin but gave up when the exchange wanted my driver's license and a selfie. Last week, I found a guide for a non-custodial wallet that doesn't ask for any of that. I followed the steps, wrote down the seed phrase on paper, and sent a small test amount. It felt good to actually own the keys myself for once. Has anyone else had a hard time finding simple guides that don't push you toward the big, tracked exchanges?

Understand why you'd ask that, but it's not really about secrecy for me. It's about having a real choice over who gets to see my personal info. Those big exchanges have had data leaks before, and I just don't trust them with my license and a photo. Using a wallet where I hold the keys feels like having cash instead of leaving all my money with one bank.

I mean, is all that secrecy even needed?

Yeah I used to feel the same way actually. But after reading through what @max223 said about actually owning your keys instead of trusting some company, it clicked for me. How do you decide where to draw the line between privacy and convenience?
