Had a client's payment get flagged and frozen because of a single word in the memo line
I was finishing up a consulting job for a firm in Denver last fall. The $2,500 invoice got paid, but the next day my bank put a hold on the funds. The compliance team called me... the client had written 'for research' in the payment note. The bank's automated system flagged it as a possible violation of their terms on certain types of financial speech. I spent three days on calls, having to explain the actual work was just market analysis. They finally released the money, but it made me think... where's the line between reasonable fraud checks and just blocking normal business talk? Has anyone else had a payment held up over something you said, not something you did?

Sounds like an overreaction by the bank.

@anna491 banks flag certain words automatically. i'd call them and ask what triggered it. fixed mine that way once.

What word was it, exactly?

Right, "what word was it" is the whole thing. It's wild how one word can set off a whole system now. Feels like walking on eggshells with auto-moderation everywhere.
