Had a guy at the hardware store save me $60 on a pipe cutter

I was standing in the plumbing aisle last Sunday, staring at a $80 Ridgid cutter I couldn't justify. An older guy walked up and said, 'You're just doing a few copper joints, right?' He showed me a cheap $20 tubing cutter and a file, then walked me through how to get a clean cut on the first try. It worked perfectly on my bathroom sink project. Has anyone else had a random stranger bail them out with a straightforward trick?

Bet that $60 savings felt better than finding a $20 bill in an old coat. The guy probably saved you from buying a whole new hobby too, since most people who splurge on that Ridgid cutter end up cutting every pipe in sight just to justify it. Classic hardware store angel move, swooping in just before you make a bad financial decision while holding a pipe wrench. I swear those old timers get a kick out of watching millennials stare at expensive tools like they're ancient artifacts. Glad he spared you from becoming the proud owner of a tool youd use once and then lend to your cousin who never gives it back. Next time just bring him along to the register for every impulse buy.

@ivanbell should just rent himself out as an impulse buy consultant.

Love hearing about those kind souls who just want to help a stranger out.

Oh man, you're totally right about the hobby thing. Pretty soon he'd be finding pipes that needed cutting just to feel like he got his money's worth.
