Just found a jar of pickles from 2019 in the back of my fridge

Cleaned out my fridge today and found a jar of pickles I bought back when I first moved into my apartment. They were still sealed, so I opened them up and honestly they smelled fine, just a bit cloudy. I tossed them anyway but it made me wonder what else is hiding in there. Anybody else ever find something ancient in their fridge that was somehow still okay?

Three years is about the cutoff for pickles in my experience - the brine gets cloudy but they're usually still okay if the seal never broke. Next time you find a mystery jar like that, check the lid for any rust or swelling before opening, that's your real warning sign. If the seal is good and the smell isn't off, you're probably fine to eat them, just trust your nose over the date.

Eating three year old jarred anything is just asking for a bad time.

Trust your nose over the date except when you open it and three years of pickle fumes hit you like a brick wall... That's when you decide if you're brave or just hungry. At least with pickles you've got the vinegar on your side, nature's little preservative loophole or whatever.
