My garage fridge became a science experiment after 6 months of neglect

Cleaned out my college kid's old mini fridge in the basement last week and found a jar of pickles from 2022 that had grown this fuzzy green lid that looked alive. Has anyone else opened a fridge door and immediately regretted every life choice that led to that moment?

Used to give my buddy grief for having a "fridge calendar" where he'd write down when he put stuff in there. Thought it was overkill. Then I opened the deep freezer we inherited from the previous homeowners and found a Tupperware container of what I'm pretty sure was beef stew from 2019 that had somehow thawed and refrozen into this weird crystalline blob. Suddenly that calendar idea didn't seem so crazy. Now I date everything with a sharpie before it even goes in the fridge.

That "weird crystalline blob" part really got me... I actually read somewhere that freezer burn can create these wild formations because the ice crystals keep melting and reforming over time. Sounds like that stew went through some kind of science experiment in there.

Sharpie in the kitchen drawer changed my life. I write the date and what it is right on the plastic bag or the lid before I even close the freezer door.
