Watched my buddy almost lose a huge freelance project last year because he didn't ask for a deposit. The client kept pushing the start date, then ghosted him for weeks after the work was outlined. He finally started requiring 30% down after that mess, says it filters out the time-wasters immediately.

Actually 50% upfront works better for filtering.

Kim charged 40% upfront after getting burned on a $5k logo project. Client paid the deposit and then backed out two weeks later. He kept the money, which covered the work he already did. That deposit rule saved him from a total loss.
