Unpopular opinion: I spent $400 on a proper accountant and it felt like a waste until tax day.
I kept my own books for two years, thinking it was simple enough. This January, I hired someone to sort out my 1099s and deductions, which cost about four hundred bucks. She found over two thousand dollars in missed write-offs from home office stuff and software subscriptions I'd forgotten about. Has anyone else put off getting professional help only to have it pay for itself?

That's a great way to look at it, but calling it "free money" isn't quite right lol. It was your money the whole time, you just didn't know how to claim it properly. The accountant's fee is basically for their know-how to find what you missed.

So you basically paid your accountant in free money she found under your couch cushions? lmao that's amazing. I guess the real waste was you doing it yourself for two years and missing all that cash. Makes that four hundred look like a genius move now, huh?
