Hit 500 hours on my orbital sander and it changed my mind on cheap tools

I bought a no-name orbital sander for $45 three years ago, figuring I'd run it into the ground. I just hit 500 hours of actual use on it this week, and it's still going strong. I've used it on everything from stripping old oak dressers to final sanding on maple tables. The vibration is a bit rough on the hands after a long day, but the motor hasn't quit. I always told apprentices to buy the expensive brand name stuff first, but this cheap unit has outlasted two of my old 'pro' models. It's made me question if we overpay for a label and a slightly better warranty. Has anyone else had a budget tool completely exceed your expectations like this?

That "overpay for a label" idea really hits home, because sometimes the cheap stuff just works until you lose it.

My dad had this generic socket wrench set for like 15 years. It finally broke last month, and the replacement from the hardware store just feels flimsy. You don't realize how much you trust a tool until the new one strips a bolt.

Honestly, 500 hours is wild for a $45 tool. But like, is it really that deep? Sometimes you just get lucky with a cheap one.

My $20 harbor freight drill has lasted through three apartment moves.
