Hot take: I used to think shellac was a pain until I had to fix a 1920s gramophone cabinet in a damp basement last month.

Did you seal the wood first?

Oh man, sealing is so important, right? I learned that the hard way last summer. I tried to stain a picnic table without sealing it first and the wood just drank up all the stain, looked totally patchy. Had to sand the whole thing down and start over, it was such a pain. A good sealant makes all the difference for an even finish.

Been there with the picnic table nightmare too! A good sealant really is the difference between a pro job and a total mess. Shellac in a damp basement though, that's a whole different beast. It's wild how the old school stuff just works where modern finishes fail. Once you fight through that sticky humidity you never take shellac for granted again.
