Question about fixing a stubborn water ring on an oak table

I had a piece with a bad white ring from a plant pot that wouldn't budge with my usual paste wax trick. Out of ideas, I tried a trick an old finisher from Tacoma told me: a 50/50 mix of white toothpaste and baking soda, rubbed gently with a soft cloth for about three minutes. It actually lifted the ring without harming the shellac finish underneath. Has anyone else found a weird household item that works for a specific stain?

Try mayonnaise on water rings, it worked on my old table.

My buddy in Cleveland fixed a ring with a walnut meat rub.
