I used to think universal basic income was a fantasy, but my town changed my mind

For years I rolled my eyes at the idea of just giving people money with no strings attached. It sounded like a lazy fix that would make everyone stop working. Then my city, Stockton, California, ran that pilot program a few years back giving $500 a month to some residents. I saw the data and talked to a neighbor who was part of it. He used the cash to fix his car, which let him take a better job across town. He didn't quit working, he worked more. The study showed most people used it for basics like food and bills, not video games. It made me realize maybe the future isn't about forcing people into bad jobs, but giving a floor so they can build something better. Has anyone else had a policy idea they hated that actually worked out in real life?

Stockton is such a good example. I had the same shift on free college tuition, thought it was a handout until my cousin used it to become an EMT.

Yeah, it's easy to judge until you see it help someone you know. Your cousin becoming an EMT is a solid example. Changes your whole view.

Totally, it's like we need to see stuff work for real people before it clicks. Happens with so many things.
