My kid's school project made me realize how much we'll miss paper maps

My daughter had to find a physical road atlas for a history assignment, and we spent an hour at the library just to locate one from 2010. The librarian mentioned they stopped ordering new ones five years ago because no one asked. It hit me that a whole generation is growing up without ever unfolding a big map on the hood of a car. I think in twenty years, the skill of reading a paper map will be as rare as knowing how to use a slide rule. Has anyone else seen a simple piece of old tech completely vanish from daily life for younger people?

I read an article about how using GPS all the time might actually change how our brains form mental maps. We just follow the line instead of learning the layout of a place. What do you think that does to our sense of direction long term?

Remember trying to refold those things?

Wasn't it easier to just buy a new one, @the_thomas?

Wasn't it kind of satisfying to finally get it right, @the_thomas?
