My garage door spring snapped and now I'm dealing with a mess

Yesterday during a heavy rain, my garage door opener just quit on me. I went to pull the release cord to open it by hand, and that's when the spring broke with a loud crack. Now the door is stuck about halfway up, so I can't fit my car inside. Water started coming in under the door, making the floor all wet and slippery. I called a repair service, but they said they can't come out until Friday. So I'm stuck parking on the street and worrying about my tools getting ruined. It's really frustrating because I use the garage every day for projects. I guess I should have looked at the spring sooner, but it always seemed okay before.

That loud crack is the worst, mine went last year and scared me half to death. My door slammed shut so hard it bent the track. Did you get a huge jolt when it broke?

Seriously? It's just a spring, not a car crash. Grant478's worry about the motor is overblown too.

Jake's right about that jolt. When my spring went, the door dropped so fast it pulled one of the cables right off the drum. The force can really mess up more than just the track. I've seen it rip the bottom bracket clean off the door panel. That loud noise is just the start of the trouble.

Speaking of the water coming in, did any of it get near your opener's motor or electrical outlet? That's a separate worry on top of the broken spring, in my experience. Moisture there could cause a short or ruin the unit completely.
