Took me 6 weekends to figure out why my garage door kept reversing

I spent almost 2 months chasing a ghost. My garage door would go down about halfway then shoot back up. Replaced the springs, checked the sensors, even bought a new logic board. Turned out the track was just a tiny bit out of alignment near the top where I never looked. A quick tap with a hammer and some grease fixed it in 5 minutes after all that work. Anyone else spend way too long on something this simple?

Drove myself nuts with virtually the same issue on a Chamberlain unit a few years back. Had the whole thing torn apart twice, even had a repair guy out once who charged me a hundred bucks to tell me it was "probably the motor." Ended up finding a small pebble wedged in the track that only showed up when the door was about three quarters of the way down. Quick scrape with a screwdriver and it worked perfect. Always check the track top to bottom before you start replacing parts, because the simple stuff hides where you least expect it.

The sensors aren't supposed to flash when blocked, but a tiny misalignment near the top is usually the real culprit with those old LiftMaster openers.

Man, isn't it funny how the smallest thing can cause so much headache? I had a buddy who spent two hours adjusting those sensors on his LiftMaster, only to find a leaf stuck near the top like you said, @the_paul. He felt pretty dumb after that, but hey, we've all been there.
