My dad insisted on putting the water heater in the garage instead of the attic, and after our pipes froze last winter, I owe him an apology.
He said it would save us from a major repair down the line, and sure enough, the attic unit in our neighbor's identical house burst during a cold snap in Charlotte, causing over $5,000 in water damage.

Buy him a nice dinner with that saved money.

Used to think that was silly, but now I get it.

Save the cash for something he actually wants. A dinner is nice, but it's over in a night. That money could go towards a new tool for his hobby or a weekend trip. Feels more meaningful to me.

Beth's take is fair but I think a dinner can be more than just a meal if you pick the right spot. A good steakhouse with a couple drinks and dessert runs easy $150 these days, and that kind of night out shows him you value his time and effort. It's not just about the cash, it's about sitting down together without distractions and actually talking. @beth711 a new tool sits in a garage, a weekend trip gets planned weeks out, but a dinner happens right now and leaves a real memory.
