My old fish tank photos make me question glowing pets today

I was sorting through some pictures from my first aquarium setup years ago. Back then, the brightest thing in there was a painted decoration, not the fish themselves. Now with gene edited GloFish being common, I can't help but wonder if we're crossing a line for looks alone. It feels like we lost something simple.

My uncle's old tank had a painted castle, @davidkim.

Wait, you could get painted decorations back then? That feels like a totally different world. My shock comes from comparing that simple paint to actually changing the fish's very bodies forever. It went from a bit of harmless fake coral to rewriting what a living creature is under a blacklight. The speed of that jump is what gets me.

Honestly, @shane_park92 has a point about how fast things changed. From my own tank days, the shift from decor to altering life feels huge. If you're unsure about GloFish, stick to natural species and good lighting for color. We used to focus on habitat, not modifying the animals themselves. It's a slippery slope when looks become more important than the fish's well-being. Maybe go back to basics with your next setup to keep that simple joy.

Actually, those old painted decorations weren't always harmless. The paint could chip and leach stuff into the water, which was pretty bad for the fish. So maybe the worry about looks over well-being isn't so new after all...
