I keep seeing people grab gift cards left under benches without checking the balance first

The last three posts in here showed someone finding a Starbucks or Amazon card, but they didn't actually verify if any money was left on it. I almost made the same mistake last week at a park in Austin until my buddy pulled out his phone and scanned the barcode to check first. How many of you actually test the balance before running to the store?

Agree with @aaron_perry, it's like people just assume things have value without checking.

Grab the app for whatever store it is and scan the barcode right there on the spot, takes ten seconds and saves you the walk of shame to the register. I always keep my phone ready with the scanner open when I spot a gift card laying around. Learned that lesson the hard way after driving twenty minutes for a $0.00 Starbucks card.
