Unpopular opinion: The Cuban Missile Crisis left us with a quiet win for diplomacy

I just learned about the backchannel talks during that scary time. People always highlight the risk of nuclear war. But a small victory was setting up the direct phone line between Washington and Moscow. This link meant leaders could chat fast to avoid mistakes. It got used in later crises, like in the Middle East, to lower tensions. That step forward in talking things out often gets forgotten. To me, it proves that even in dark moments, we can build something good.

Funny how that phone line probably made leaders less jumpy in general. Knowing you can just pick up the phone changes how you react to every little alert.

The Moscow-Washington hotline started in 1963. Close calls like Able Archer in 1983 show it didn't stop leaders from being jumpy.

Kept a hotline with my rival and it cooled things down.

But did it really change much? We still had decades of scary proxy wars and arms races after that... feels like the hotline just managed panic without fixing the real problems.
