Was dead set that HOA fees were a scam until my roof got replaced for $0 out of pocket

Always thought homeowners dues were just burning money, but after a hail storm took out my roof last spring the association covered it fully with no deductible from me. Am I crazy for now thinking the fees might actually be worth it, or did I just get lucky with a good HOA?

Man, tell me about it. My buddy Mike used to bitch every single month about his HOA until a tree branch smashed his fence during a storm. The HOA sent someone out the next day and fixed it, no questions asked. He called me after like "I guess I'm not canceling those dues now." He still complains about the rules sometimes but he's quiet about the money part. It's wild how fast your whole attitude shifts once you actually get something back.

Oh man @foster.tessa you nailed it. I had this old pair of boots I wore for years, never really thought about them until one winter the sole finally gave out and I had to walk to the bus stop in the snow. Suddenly I was like, man those boots were the best. It's funny how you take simple stuff for granted until it's gone or you actually need it. I got a new pair now and I'm already doing the same thing, just not thinking about them until I step in a puddle.
