Overheard a pilot on a layover talking about something he saw near Phoenix
I was grabbing coffee at a truck stop outside Flagstaff last Saturday when two airline pilots sat down next to me. One of them was telling the other about a formation of lights over the Superstition Mountains that didn't show up on his radar or any other aircraft's transponder. He said it lasted about 14 minutes and the lights moved in a pattern that didn't match any known military drills. The other pilot just nodded and said 'yeah, we don't talk about those nights.' Made me wonder how many people up there see stuff and just keep quiet about it. Anyone here ever overheard a pro talking about something they can't explain?

Oh I believe it completely. My husband was a private pilot for years and he told me about a night over the Mogollon Rim where he saw lights that just floated and split apart, no sound at all, and he never filed a report because he didn't want the FAA asking questions. He said most pilots have something like that in their back pocket, they just learn to keep it to themselves because nobody wants to be that guy.

Huh. I mean, I don't doubt that pilots see weird stuff up there. But let's be real - "we don't talk about those nights" sounds like something from a bad movie. More likely they just didn't want to get into a long boring story with a stranger. And most pilots probably keep quiet about UFOs for the same reason I don't tell people about the time I thought I saw a bear in my backyard but it was just a trash bag. Nobody wants to sound dumb. Not everything needs to be a secret society.
