Found out my landlord's 'eviction notice' was fake after I checked the county clerk's website myself
I got a notice taped to my door last week claiming I had 3 days to move out for late rent, but I paid on time and had the receipt. After spending 20 minutes on the county clerk's public records site, I saw that no eviction filing existed under my address or name. Has anyone else had a landlord try this bluff and what did you do to shut it down?
Call your landlord and tell them you checked the county clerk website and there's no filing under your name. Let them know you have the rent receipt and that you'll be reporting them to the housing authority if they try this again. I had a landlord pull this exact trick and once I mentioned the public records and legal consequences, he backpedaled hard and blamed it on a "clerk mistake." Keep that receipt and a screenshot of the county site in case you need to show a judge.
That landlord stuff is just one example of how people try to push things when they think you won't push back. Really feels like it happens everywhere now, not just with rentals. You have to learn the system or people will walk all over you because they count on you not knowing your rights. Keeping good records and looking up public info is just smart at this point. Sad that we have to be our own detectives just to keep things honest.
