My landlord hit me with a specific criticism about my sublease that changed how I handle all my roommates now
I was subleasing my extra room in Chicago for $700 a month and my landlord found out. She told me my sublease agreement was missing a clause about the security deposit being held in a separate account, which is actually required in Illinois. I had to pay a $200 fine and rewrite the whole thing. Now I check state laws every single time before I even post a room for rent online. Does anyone else double check landlord tenant laws before writing up a lease or do you just use a standard form?

Wow, she actually made you rewrite the whole thing and hit you with a $200 fine? That sucks. I had no idea Illinois required the security deposit to sit in a separate account like that. Honestly that feels like something only a lawyer would even think to put in there. I woulda been so mad if I got fined for something that specific.
