Found an old letter I wrote to my mom after college and barely recognized myself
I was cleaning out my closet last weekend and found a letter I wrote to my mom back in 2012 after my first semester at college. In it I was all dramatic about how hard it was and how I missed her cooking... reading it now I sound like a total kid. These days I live in Austin and we talk almost every day but it's way more chill, just checking in and joking around. The thing that changed was I moved 3 states away in 2018 and realized I needed to stop relying on her for emotional backup all the time. Has anyone else found old notes or letters that made you cringe at your younger self?
Found an old journal from high school myself last year and it was rough. I wrote this whole long entry about how my mom just didn't understand me after she grounded me for missing curfew. Reading it now I just laugh because she was totally right and I was being a brat. I remember thinking I was so grown up at 17 but looking back I barely knew anything about real life. These days I call her for advice on big stuff like moving or money but I handle my own small problems first. I think finding those old letters is a good reminder of how much we actually grow up even when it doesn't feel like it. Just shows you're doing things right if you can look back and cringe.
@the_tessa you really hit on something there. It is wild how we go from thinking we have everything figured out to realizing we were just kids throwing fits. I found a letter I wrote to my best friend in 10th grade about how our school was so unfair for making us take gym class, and now I actually miss running around the track. Makes you wonder what little things we are getting worked up about today that will seem silly ten years from now.
