Hot take: I used to roll my eyes at slow burn horror movies until one night changed my mind
I always thought slow burn horror was just boring, like nothing happens for two hours then a jump scare at the end. But my buddy Mark sat me down last month and made me watch The Witch with him at his apartment. He didn't say anything during the whole movie, just let it play out. Around the 45 minute mark when the goat started acting weird I felt this knot in my stomach that never went away. By the end I was gripping my couch cushion without realizing it. He just looked at me after the credits and said 'see, the dread is the whole point.' Now I get it, it's not about being scared it's about feeling unsettled the whole time. Anybody else have a movie that flipped your opinion on a whole genre like that?

and that goat scene man, that's the exact moment you realize you're not watching a regular horror movie anymore. Once you get that feeling of dread that just sits in your chest and doesn't leave, it changes how you watch everything. The Witch is honestly one of the best examples of this because it's not trying to scare you with loud noises, it's making you feel like something is wrong in the air the whole time. I had the same shift happen with The Blackcoat's Daughter, that movie is just pure atmosphere and quiet terror, no jump scares at all. Now I actually look for slow burn horror first because the payoff is so much more satisfying than a cheap scream.

Total agreement on the goat scene. That's the moment when the movie stops being a period drama and turns into something else. For people new to slow burn horror, I'd say start with The Witch or The Blackcoat's Daughter but also check out The Invitation. That one does the same thing where the dread just builds from the first handshake and never lets up. Once you train yourself to watch for the tension in the air instead of waiting for a jump, you can't go back to the cheap stuff.

Respectfully gotta push back a little on The Blackcoat's Daughter being a good starting point for slow burn horror. In my experience, that one is actually pretty tough for newcomers because it's so deliberately slow and cryptic. I've recommended it to a few people who liked The Witch and they bounced off it hard. The Invitation is a much smarter suggestion though, that movie is basically perfect for easing into this kind of tension. It helps that it's set in a modern house with normal people talking, so the dread feels more relatable compared to a 1600s Puritan setting. Your mileage may vary of course, but I'd maybe start with The Witch or The Invitation and save Blackcoat's Daughter for when you're already hooked on the slow burn thing.
