Watched a movie with my grandpa who kept pausing it every 5 minutes to lecture me about the plot holes

It was during a screening of The Dark Knight at his house last Christmas. He hit pause right after the Joker's pencil trick and spent 15 minutes explaining why bank robbers would never use a machine gun that loud. Then he unpaused it, watched for 3 more minutes, and paused again to complain about how Batman's voice modulator sounded 'too digital.' I was frustrated at first but now I kind of miss his running commentary. Anybody else have a family member who ruins movies with their constant corrections?

That 15-minute lecture on machine guns - did your grandpa actually work in law enforcement or something?

Yeah the "15-minute lecture" part hits home, my uncle was the same way with his old service stories. He wasn't in law enforcement but he was a mechanic for the Marines back in the 80s and would go on forever about the M249 and M60 differences. It used to annoy me as a kid but looking back I realize he was just trying to share something he cared about and maybe felt like nobody else listened to him. Those long rambles usually come from a place of wanting to connect even if they don't come out that way.

Oh man, you gotta lean into it next time and ask him questions before he even gets the chance to pause. I let my dad do the same thing with old westerns and now I just hand him the remote first thing. It turns a frustrating experience into something you actually look forward to.
