Just found out my city charges a $250 fee for home-based businesses
I was looking into starting a small side gig doing custom woodworking out of my garage. Called the city planning office in Santa Ana and they said I need a conditional use permit that costs $250 just to apply. Plus they have to do a neighborhood review and everything. I had no idea there was that much red tape for something so small. Has anyone else dealt with getting permits for a side hustle in Orange County?

$250 is just the cost of doing business legally, way cheaper than fighting a $5000 fine later.

Has anyone stopped to consider that this $250 fee might actually be a bargain compared to what could happen if a neighbor complains and you get shut down without a permit? A few hundred bucks now could save you from fines or legal trouble later, especially in Orange County where code enforcement tends to be pretty strict. It's annoying, but I'd rather pay the fee and sleep easy than risk my whole side gig over something like this.

Wait, isn't Orange County pretty hit or miss with code enforcement depending on which city you're in... I thought places like Anaheim and Santa Ana are way stricter than say, San Juan Capistrano or Laguna Beach. My buddy got a warning for a backyard shed in Garden Grove but another guy in Villa Park has been running an unlicensed workshop for years without any trouble. It's not really one uniform rule across the whole county. So that $250 fee might be a safe bet in some spots but just an extra tax in others. Hard to say it's a bargain when the risk isn't the same everywhere.
