Had to decide between paving driveways or doing decorative concrete work 5 years ago
Tbh I had this choice back in 2019 when I was starting my own concrete business. One option was regular driveway paving, steady work but boring as hell. The other was stamped patios and colored walkways, way more interesting but harder to find customers. I went with the decorative side, and honestly it took about 2 years before I was making consistent money off it. Now I get calls for custom fire pits and backyard designs, but I still wonder if I woulda been better off just sticking to the straightforward stuff. Anyone else pick the niche option over the safe one and have it take a while to pay off?

Read an article a while back that said most concrete guys who stick with plain driveways end up burning out faster. Something about the repetition just killing your drive. My uncle ran a paving crew for 30 years and he said the same thing, the monotony got to him eventually. Decorative work might take longer to build up, but you're probably saving your own sanity in the long run. Take it from somebody who watched their dad do the same boring driveways for decades, that niche choice sounds like the better deal.

Yeah @murray.cora nailed it. Repetition will kill your will to work faster than slow pay ever could.
