Appreciation post: the guy who showed me his 'sock iron' contraption

Met this dude Dave at a flea market in Portland last summer. He had this weird setup with a heated hairbrush taped to a cutting board, claiming it irons socks flat in 10 seconds without burning them. I laughed at first, but after trying it on a wrinkled pair of my own socks, it actually worked way better than my actual iron. Has anyone else stumbled on a weird tool like that that just does its job perfectly?

Ngl, "jankiest solutions end up being the most practical" is basically the tagline for half the stuff in my garage. That line hit me because I have a literal brick wrapped in an old t-shirt that I use to flatten my work pants when I'm in a rush, no joke. But a heated hairbrush on a cutting board? That's a whole new level of jank I can't even wrap my head around. I'm honestly shocked it didn't catch the board on fire or melt the bristles into a puddle of plastic. Tbh, Dave sounds like a genius and a menace at the same time, and I kinda respect it.

Not to be that person, but a heated hairbrush on a cutting board isn't really a "sock iron" since irons use a flat metal plate, not bristles pressing down. Still, if it works for socks then it's doing something right. Sometimes the jankiest solutions end up being the most practical ones, don't they?

Wait, a heated hairbrush on a cutting board is actually a thing people do for socks? That's wild to me, I've never once thought about using a hairbrush that way. I guess necessity is the mother of invention but that still sounds like a fire hazard waiting to happen.
