Tried mod podge as a clear coat on my phone case and now it's sticky forever

I slapped a coat of mod podge on a custom painted phone case thinking it'd seal it like a pro finish but now it's tacky and attracts lint like crazy. Learned that stuff isn't meant for anything you actually touch daily, guess I shoulda used a proper spray sealant. Anyone know a way to strip mod podge off plastic without ruining the paint underneath?

Soak the case in warm soapy water for 15-20 minutes. The mod podge should soften up and peel off in sheets without pulling the paint. I had a similar disaster on a decoupage project and dish soap saved it. Just be gentle and use your fingers not a scrub brush.

My sister tried that exact trick on a phone case she decorated with pressed flowers and mod podge. Only she forgot about it for like two hours and the water turned cold. When she peeled it off the mod podge came off fine but a few flowers stuck to her fingers and she had little wet flower bits all over her hands. She was so mad about ruining the flowers she spent forever picking out. At least the paint on the case didn't budge though so the method works if you pay attention to the clock.

Oh man, that's exactly the kind of thing that happens to me! I tried soaking a mod podge disaster on a wooden sign I made for my kitchen and got sidetracked helping my kid with homework. Came back an hour later and the mod podge was this mushy slime that just smeared everywhere instead of peeling clean. I had to scrub it with a toothbrush and still ended up with little gummy bits stuck in the wood grain. So yeah, setting a timer on my phone is a must now or else the whole thing turns into a sticky nightmare.
