Spent $45 on a capacitor kit for my 2001 TV and it fired right back up
I was about to toss my old tube TV because the picture kept shrinking, but a guy online said to replace the electrolytic capacitors for under $50. After an hour of soldering and $45 in parts, the thing works perfectly again. Did you get burned buying expensive replacement parts that didn't work, or did a cheap fix like this actually save you money?

Had a buddy try to fix his old stereo receiver with a capacitor kit he found online. He spent about $40 on it, spent two hours soldering, and the thing just hummed louder than before. Turns out he bought the wrong voltage caps and fried the board. But I've also seen him drop $200 on a "professional repair" that lasted three months before the same problem came back. That cheap fix might not work every time, but when it does it beats paying someone else to do it. Have you ever tried recapping something yourself or do you usually just scrap the gear?
