Used a guitar string to fix my dad's old toaster... somehow worked
So last weekend my toaster died, just stopped popping. I looked online and people wanted $35 for a new spring mechanism. That's more than the toaster's worth. I had an old acoustic guitar string sitting around, the low E one. I cut a piece, bent it into a coil shape with some pliers, and wedged it in where the original spring was. It's been 4 days and the toast comes up perfect. Anyone else used random music stuff to fix appliances?

That thing about guitar strings fixing toasters is wild... my buddy Keith did something similar with a ukulele string on his rice cooker last year. The little steam latch broke and he just tied some fishing line around it to hold the lid down. It worked weirdly well for like two months until the string snapped from the heat. He said the rice came out a little chewy but not bad honestly. Your trick sounds way more permanent though... I might actually try that if my toaster ever gives up.

Heard some guy on a podcast say you can use a cut up credit card as a temporary fix for some plastic parts in small appliances. Probably not as classy as a guitar string but hey, whatever works until you get the real part.

@foster.jordan I read somewhere that people snap old guitar strings and use them as makeshift hinges for kitchen cabinet doors too. The tension is just right for that kind of stuff. Your buddy Keith's ukulele string fix sounds sketchy with the heat though, cooking rice with fishing line holding the lid is wild.
