Man, I totally feel that! I actually tried this trick on a trip last fall and it saved my gear when a zipper on my pack busted open. @umar49, your method is legit - I had a trash compactor bag double up as a waterproof liner inside my stuff sack, and even after a creek crossing, my sleeping bag stayed bone dry. It's kinda funny how the cheapest fix works better than those fancy dry sacks sometimes, right?
Oh man, that creek crossing story hit home... I had a similar scare last summer when I slipped crossing a stream and my whole pack went under for a few seconds. I was so sure my quilt was ruined but nope, that trash compactor bag inside a regular stuff sack saved it completely. It's wild how something from the grocery store can do a better job than gear that costs ten times as much... I've been telling everyone I hike with about this trick now.
