That abandoned gas station on Route 9 in New Paltz tells a bigger story than you'd think

I stopped to take a leak there last week thinking it was still open since the pumps are still up. But the building's been gutted for at least 5 years, and there's a whole row of these places along that stretch. Nobody in the local paper covered why they all shut down at once. I talked to an old timer at the diner who said the owner died and the family fought over the land for 3 years. Meanwhile the town just left it sitting there with weeds growing through the cracks. It's like a monument to how small business gets swallowed up and nobody documents it. Makes you wonder how many other ghost stations are rotting across the country right now. Has anyone else noticed these falling apart near you?

Guess the only thing pumping there now is weeds and regret. I counted three ghost stations on a back road near Poughkeepsie, all with those faded price signs still showing $3.89 from 2014. At this rate we'll have more monuments to forgotten gas than we have actual gas stations.

Oh that 3.89 detail really hits, doesn't it? Like a little time capsule from before everything went crazy. Those faded numbers are honestly more depressing than the actual abandoned buildings. I swear every small town has at least one of those ghosts now, just sitting there with the canopy lights still on sometimes. It's wild how fast it all happened, you blink and suddenly half the stations you grew up driving past are just empty lots with cracked concrete. Regular gas around here is pushing 4.50 now and I still catch myself staring at those old signs like they're ancient artifacts lol.

My uncle actually owned a station in upstate New York that closed in 2015. He was the last guy pumping gas there for like twenty years before that. Anyway he kept the old sign with the prices frozen from 2012, said it was his retirement trophy. Now the building's a vape shop but the canopy lights still flicker on sometimes during storms. It's like the ghosts know when to show up.
