Why does nobody talk about the hidden costs of freelance passion work

I spent 3 months building a freelance illustration business last year before I realized I was spending $180 a month just on software licenses, portfolio hosting, and health insurance. Nobody warned me that following my passion would mean budgeting for stuff like QuickBooks Self-Employed at $15/month and a dedicated workspace. It took me until tax season to figure out I was actually losing money. Has anyone else been blindsided by expenses they didn't expect when they switched to a dream gig?
