Appreciation post: Why I pushed back on equal bill splitting with my roommate

Lots of folks think splitting bills evenly with roommates is the way to go, but I disagree. When my roommate was on a long trip, I was using all the power alone. It didn't seem right to pay half for his empty room. We discussed it and now we split based on who's home. Some say it's petty, but it saved us both cash and kept peace. I think being open about money stops bigger problems later. It's just fair, you know?

Ugh, my old roommate and I once had a silent war over who left dirty dishes out!

This bill split thing shows a common habit of picking easy rules over fair ones in daily life. We see it with chores, group dinners, or even splitting a cab fare, where people avoid the awkward talk. Having that honest chat early on, like you did, saves a lot of hassle down the road.

Smart! Splitting by actual use stops so much drama later.
