Changed my mind about paying for antivirus software after a ransomware scare

I always used free antivirus. Thought it was good enough. Then last month my buddy's shop in Austin got hit with ransomware. Wiped out his POS system, cost him $4,000 to recover. He showed me the logs from his paid software that blocked the same attack two days earlier on another machine. Now I pay $60 a year for Bitdefender. Has anyone else had a close call that made them switch?

Started using free stuff for years without thinking about it. Never had a problem so figured it was just a scam to sell subscriptions. But after that ransomware hit my buddy I started digging into what actually happens with free antivirus programs. Found out most of them are basically just database scanners that catch known viruses but can't do anything about new variants that pop up daily. The paid ones use behavior monitoring and heuristics that catch stuff before it even has a signature file... that's the real difference nobody talks about. Plus they got those rollback features that can undo the damage if something does slip through. Kinda like insurance you hope you never need but glad you got when things go sideways.

Heard that @jamieb80. Same thing clicked for me after my work computer got hit. Switched to a paid one with behavior blocking and never looked back. Peace of mind is worth the few bucks a month.
