Heard a guy at the bar swear that "vintage" American cars from the 70s actually got better gas mileage than anything today

I looked it up later and the best a 1978 Chevy Malibu could manage was about 18 MPG highway, which is less than half of what a basic 2024 Honda Civic gets, but I wonder if he was confusing old muscle cars with the simpler engines or something else.

Did he maybe mean they were easier to fix yourself and keep running?

People really love to turn simple statements into deep life philosophies. Maybe the guy just meant his old truck didn't have a computer in it.
