TIL my office printer has been secretly downgrading my documents for 6 months
I was at the FedEx on 5th Avenue last week trying to print something for a court filing. The clerk looked at my PDF and said 'your font looks jagged, did you print this on economy mode?' I told her it came from my work printer. She showed me the difference on her machine. Turns out my IT guy set everyone to 'draft quality' to save toner. Has anyone else's office secretly changed settings like that?

Your font looks jagged" oh man that one got me... can you imagine being in court and handing over documents that look like you printed them on a potato? I'd be so embarrassed I'd probably just tell the judge my dog chewed up the real copies or something. Six months is wild though, like that's almost a whole work year of everyone walking around with garbage prints and nobody saying anything until the FedEx clerk drops the truth bomb. I wonder how many important things got rejected or looked unprofessional in that time and people just thought it was normal.

My buddy Mike had the same thing happen at his law firm. One day he printed out this huge contract for a client signing and the attorney was like "why does this look like it came from a 1992 fax machine?" They found out the office manager bumped everything to "fast draft" mode like 8 months earlier without telling anyone. Cost him like 3 extra hours reprinting everything on the down low so nobody would know.

Read an article just the other day about how one of those big chain print shops had to shut down for a whole weekend because someone accidentally set all their printers to "toner saver" mode... turned out it was some IT guy who changed a default setting and forgot to tell anyone. Fourteen print jobs had to get redone, and three clients switched to another company over the whole mess. Article said the company lost like six grand in reprints and refunds. Always seems to be one little setting that causes the biggest headaches.
