Shoutout to that $8 oven thermometer that saved my baking
My built-in oven display said 350 but everything kept burning on the bottom. Picked up a cheap Taylor oven thermometer at Ace Hardware last Saturday and it turns out my oven runs 50 degrees hot. Adjusted my recipes down and finally got a decent batch of cookies without any charcoal edges. Has anyone else tested their oven temp and found a huge difference?

Right there with you @emery290, my oven was lying to me for years and I just thought I forgot how to bake. Grabbed the same $8 Taylor thermometer and found out it runs 50 degrees hot too, which explains why my cookies always looked like they were auditioning for a charcoal commercial. Funny how a cheap little gadget makes me feel less like a baking disaster and more like I'm actually being smart.

See I'm gonna push back on this a little @viola_lopez30. I mean maybe the oven thermometer is great and all but honestly I think people way overthink baking temperatures. Like cookies are supposed to be a little crispy on the edges and soft in the middle right? So if they come out darker than you expected just pull them out a minute earlier next time instead of buying a whole gadget and second guessing everything. Idk maybe it's just me but my grandma baked by feel for 60 years and her cookies were perfect every time without ever checking the temp. Plus now you're gonna be paranoid about every single recipe and wondering if it's your oven or you. Sometimes ignorance is bliss you know?
